9 year old with rocket arm banned from pitching little league

...for safety concerns, ostensibly. Jericho Scott has a 40 mph pitch. He's obviously a superstar. They banned him from pitching because they're worried he'll hurt someone. "He throws so hard that the Youth Baseball League of New Haven told his coach that the boy could not pitch any more. When Jericho took the mound anyway last week, the opposing team forfeited the game, packed its gear and left, his coach said... The team was 8-0 and on its way to the playoffs when Jericho was banned from pitching... parents expressed safety concerns... Facing that kind of speed" is frightening for beginning players, Noble said."

founder This kid should have been offered the opportunity to play up a level if he was that good but he didn't have to take it. Maybe he just wanted to play with his friends. I am sure that this organization (as most do) held some sort of evaluation period or try out to get a handle on how good a player is. I can't believe that the powers that be (competition committee, Coaches, etc) didn't know how good that kid was when they are picking/assigning teams. I am sure that the boy didn't just wake up one morning and figure out how to throw an accurate 40mph pitch. Someone noticed. Now that he is playing his best and no one is close to hitting his pitches, it is upsetting the other parents. I doubt the kids from that other team in the story REALLY wanted to forfeit. It was a parent/coach and he/she should be embarrassed. This is way beyond FOUL! [QUOTE]

founder Isn't it insane to expose little kids to 40 mph pitches? I mean, most of these kids, at this age, are not serious ball players, and most will not be playing by 14 or 15. So, why expose a cute little league to a ferociously gifted athlete's 40 mph ball? Let's suppose the kid is dead accurate too. At this age, many kids look around, wave to their parents, look at daisies, etc. If your kid looked up for his mom, and stepped in the box, or zone, of whatever you sports people call it, and lost his teeth, wouldn't you be pissed? You'd be less pissed if the kids were 15, but you'd be pissed at this age. These little kids should not be exposed to 40 mph fast balls. It's not about winning or losing, it's about safety. FAIR. founder i am assuming you don't have kids in little league or you would know what a ridiculous argument you are making. At that age, I would much rather my kid go against a pitcher that consistantly throws strikes as opposed to the beginner that is so wild that he couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. That is where the kids get hurt and where they lose interest in the game. [QUOTE]

OK, seriously people. For those of you that are saying this kiddo is pitching too fast, do you even know how fast a 9 year old AVERAGE pitcher throws??? 38 to 43 mph. My 5-year old (who just completed his first season of t-ball and is no more gifted a baseball player than I) can hit a 35 mph pitch at the batting cages about 3 out of 10 times. Seriously...this story is driving me crazy, because the bottom line is a little boy is being very unfairly treated due to some stupid adults that are trying to live vicariously through their children and will stop at nothing to win. GROW UP!!!! I have a 9-year old that plays baseball. Just turned 9 in June, and some of the kiddos he plays against are about to turn 10. He throws about 50+, as most of the pitchers in his "recreational league" do. I have a 13 year old that throws 72+ consistently, so he plays triple A ball and has for the past 4 years. I KNOW what I'm talking about. I've sat through more games than most of you can imagine. Lay off this kiddo. Let him play and take the idiots that run the league out of the equation. Tlk is right on the money saying a consistent pitcher is better. This is so FOUL it reeks! [QUOTE]
