Soluto - figures out why your computer is so slow and fixes it

Soluto takes user-submitted data from its application and uses it to figure out which software works best on each computer. It can identify which hardware has had issues with which software. It can also help you pick out software that runs well on the specific model of PC you’re using, based on other users. To monetize, Soluto has a few options. It will offer a freemium model with two plans: manual, which is suitable for people who are already computer savvy.

Upgrading To Windows 7 Could Take More Than 20 Hours (MSFT)

Many upgrades to Microsoft's forthcoming Windows 7 will take one to three hours -- a reasonable amount of time. But some upgrades could take more than 20 hours, Microsoft employee Chris Hernandez says on a company blog.

Ubuntu as slick as Win7, Mac OS X

Here's what the official press release won't tell you about Ubuntu 9.04, which formally hit the streets overnight: its designers have polished the hell out of its user interface since the last release in October. So much so, in fact, that I am starting to prefer using my Ubuntu "Jaunty Jackalope" desktop over the similarly slick Windows 7 beta (which I am currently running full-time on one desktop) and Mac OS X Leopard operating systems, which I also use regularly.

"I'm a Linux"-Linux to compete with the "I'm a Mac" ad w/ contest

Linux2
unlike Microsoft's campaign that paid Jerry Seinfeld $3 million for two commercials and acquired user videos for free, the Linux Foundation plans to compensate the winner of its contest with a free trip to Tokyo to participate in the Linux Foundation Japan Linux Symposium next October. The group hopes the submitted videos "showcase just what Linux means to those who use it, and hopefully inspires many to try it." The Linux Foundation may not have the $300 or $486 million that Microsoft and Apple spent on their battles between John Hodgman and his look alike, but it does have the support of flocks of dedicated Linux users and a strong online community to defend and promote whatever comes of the contest.

Microsoft hires Seinfeld for $10M. How's that gonna work out?

Microsoft is starting a new campaign featuring Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld together. They're trying to fix the public's perception of Microsoft (and presumably Vista). From the article: "Specifically, Microsoft is paying Seinfeld $10 million to pal around with Gates and joke about how cool Windows is... Microsoft will never be cool in the same way that Apple is cool--in part because companies with 90% market share are almost never cool (sorry, but nine out of ten kids in the class can't be cool)."

Sigh. Oh Microsoft. Windows dies with blue screen at Olympics

2008-08-12-nest1
(click [more] to see these incredible pictures). A lot of the special video effects were apparently being run by Windows. Amazingly, Windows sucks for the Chinese too. From the article: "It appears one of the many Microsoft computers projecting images of 5000 years of Chinese history onto the facade of the Bird's Nest during the opening ceremony crashed. And crashed hard. Gizmodo reported Monday on the appearance of the 'Blue Screen of Death,'"
