Claim: Yelp is extorting businesses to pay up or get bad ratings

Since then, many business owners from around the country have come forward — via e-mails or comments on the Express' web site — alleging similar tales of extortionist tactics by Yelp sales reps. To make matters worse, Stoppelman's handling of the allegations exposed the company's blaring hypocrisy.

Has Twitter Peaked?

Ever since last summer, Twitter’s growth in the U.S. has been stalling. But in October, the number of people who visited Twitter.com from the U.S. actually declined for the first time by 8 percent month-over-month. Estimates released today by comScore put Twitter’s domestic unique visitors at 19.2 million, down from 20.9 million in September.

Twitter Cofounder: "We're Not Pursuing Advertising"

To make money, Twitter will sell businesses access to a "lightweight analytics" tool and a directory of commercial accounts, cofounder Biz Stone told the Reuters Global Technology Summit in New York. He said Twitter is also considering revenue-sharing deals with mobile phone carriers.

Profeesor: Web startups don't need VC anymore b/c it's so cheap

As the cost of starting a Web company decreases, thanks to cloud computing services and technology that entrepreneurs can rent instead of buy, many founders can finance a new company without the help of venture capitalists, using their savings, money from family and friends and credit card debt, Mr. Hendershott writes. More often, they are choosing to sell small, immature companies instead of taking the longer, riskier path of developing a business that could one day go public. That makes venture capital less relevant, he concludes.

Blerp - overlays comment forum onto existing web pages

The web application it’s introducing today is dubbed Blerp, and its ambition is to turn the Web into a giant interactive message board by making it possible for visitors to add text comments and multimedia to existing web pages and share them with their friends. Under the motto ‘layer the web!’, Blerp aims to enable people to enrich web pages with an additional layer of content with the ability to let others join in on the fun at any time. RocketOn is calling the concept Hyperlayers, and if the idea makes you think of social annotation services like Reframe It, Diigo or Fleck, that’s because it’s taking an extremely similar route with Blerb.

Babble Raises $1 Million For Hipster Parenting Site

Babble, a magazine and parenting community site aimed at urban hipsters, has secured $1 million in Series A funding from Greycroft Partners. This round adds to the $2 million Babble raised earlier from Village Ventures in December of 2008. (This is an extension of that round at the same valuation) Spun off from sex and dating community Nerve Media, Babble takes a more modern view on parenting, aimed at a younger generation of parents who live in cities, equally share parenting duties (or at least make an effort) and use the internet to access information. It is the same demographic that the magazine Cookie is going after, except it tries to appeal to the Dads as well. Urbanbaby.com is also a site that appeals to urban dwellers and parents.

Twitter, Facebook Grossly Overvalued

If a short selling genie granted me two wishes, my first would be for Twitter or Facebook to IPO. My second would be for a mid-sized company like Yahoo (YHOO) to acquire Facebook . This way, I can finally take advantage of these companies' gross overvaluations. Internet advertising is maturing. It is easy to target ads by location and context. There are no ‘monetization issues’ anymore for large sites. If your site is not making much money, it is because the traffic is not worth that much. End of story.

Facebook Begins Testing Virtual Currency

There has been speculation for well over a year now about Facebook’s “soon to launch” virtual currency, but up until now, no services had been rolled out. As of last night, Facebook began testing the ability to let users send credits to each via comments according to Venturebeat’s Eric Eldon. Facebook has previously reached out to developers via the developer forum for testing out a virtual currency system but since then very little has been mentioned.
