StatsMix - custom dashboards for web analytics

StatsMix allows companies to easily build, visualize, and share custom management dashboards for displaying and analyzing key metrics from their own Websites and external APIs. StatsMix already supports and integrates with metrics from about 30 popular web services, including Google Analytics, Quantcast, MailChimp, Freshbooks, Twitter, Facebook, Get Satisfaction, WordPress, and YouTube, and is adding more regularly. They also provide a REST based API and other simple mechanisms to integrate with internal metrics. The company showed off a unique “insight engine” which automatically draws correlations between various metrics, helping users to quickly identify what may be driving trends or anomalies.

Tynt - Track copy and pastes from your website

(they just raised $8M) The company allows publishers to monitor copying of text on their websites. 2% of page views involve a user ctrl-c copying of text (for news sites, it’s 7%), Albinson told me today. None of that is tracked, and when that copied text is shared in emails or on social sites, there’s no link back. Tynt automatically adds a unique, trackable link back to the page in the copied text. It looks like this:

Tetris Friends: There Will Be Blocks

Recently, Lucas Hannon linked me to Tetris Friends, a website featuring a flash based version of the puzzle classic. Now, I’m not exactly a Tetris maniac, nor am I a fan of flash-based games. Although….when one of the other writers on OLC throws down the gauntlet, BY GOD I will pick it up.

Should this teen-trash site be protected by free speech?

"It's vile," said Whitman Principal Alan Goodwin, who added that he is a firm believer in free speech but is vexed by the anonymity that the Web site, http://www.peoplesdirt.com, provides for maligning remarks against high schoolers who are named. "Some of these things are causing certain students great distress," he said.

Profeesor: Web startups don't need VC anymore b/c it's so cheap

As the cost of starting a Web company decreases, thanks to cloud computing services and technology that entrepreneurs can rent instead of buy, many founders can finance a new company without the help of venture capitalists, using their savings, money from family and friends and credit card debt, Mr. Hendershott writes. More often, they are choosing to sell small, immature companies instead of taking the longer, riskier path of developing a business that could one day go public. That makes venture capital less relevant, he concludes.

Gantter Does Project Management in Your Browser (for free)

Ganttchart1
Web-based project management tool Gantter has an interface that looks remarkably similar to Microsoft Project—and even lets you import and export your Project files. Using the application is fairly simple—just start adding tasks and resources just like you would on the desktop version of Microsoft Project. Once you've finished, you can download the project as an XML file, which can then be imported back into Project. You can import projects, open saved files, and use the wide array of keyboard shortcuts all from a web-based interface that works anywhere and requires no account to use—making this worth a look for anybody dealing with project plans and TPS reports.

Extremist Web Sites Are Using U.S. Hosts- Should this be illegal?

On March 25, a Taliban Web site claiming to be the voice of the "Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan" boasted of a deadly new attack on coalition forces in that country. Four soldiers were killed in an ambush, the site claimed, and the "mujahideen took the weapons and ammunition as booty." Most remarkable about the message was how it was delivered. The words were the Taliban's, but they were flashed around the globe by an American-owned firm located in a leafy corner of downtown Houston.

How Social Media Is Taking Your Company Captive

When the Internet was first starting to take off, I remember a mad scramble to buy up the domain names of major brands and then hold the URLs hostage. It was a simple and old idea: Major companies were slow to realize that owning their URL was critical, and smart, enterprising individuals made them pay for their mistakes. I believe -- though I do not remember the details -- that some level of regulation meant that no one got an enormous payout for having picked up an address like mcdonalds.com. But certainly that was the game many people tried to run.

EHarmony launches gay matchmaking service - how will it do?

(note - it had to by court order) The adamantly heterosexual dating website, which has accepted only male-female couples since its inception in 2000, is launching a gay matchmaking service called Compatible Partners (www.compatiblepartners.net). But EHarmony's new relationship with the gay community is more like a shotgun wedding: The company agreed in November to start the dating service as part of a settlement with the New Jersey attorney general in the wake of a discrimination suit.
