Will Senate Candidate Blumenthal Survive Vietnam Controversy?

Blumenthal was defiant Tuesday in responding to charges that he'd lied about being in the Vietnam War. The New York Times reported Monday on several comments he's made over the years, including this one from 2008: "We have learned something important since the days that I served in Vietnam." After getting draft deferments for five years, Blumenthal became a member of the Marine Corps Reserve in 1970 and was stationed in the U.S. He never served overseas.

40th anniversary of Kent State massacre

May 4 was the 40th anniversary of the Kent State massacre, in which the Ohio National Guard shot and killed four college students at Kent State University - two who were protesting the Vietnam War, and two who were simply walking outside between classes. A fifth student's spine was severed by a bullet; he was confined to a wheelchair for life and remains so to this day.

Lt. Col. Weitz: Learn From Vietnam- No Winning In Afghanistan

Have we not learned the lessons of Vietnam and Iraq? No! Listen to defense strategists and generals. How about McNamara, Westmoreland, Rumsfeld and the many generals replaced in Iraq? As for supporting democratic governments, what about those puppet governments in South Vietnam and the fragile coalition now ruling Iraq? As for greater troop strength, have we forgotten the 500,000 for Vietnam?
