Image of Moon orbiting Earth taken 114 million miles away

Article-1305422-0ae35ebe000005dc-900_634x451
A beautiful, thought-provoking picture, this image was actually taken as part of Messenger's mission to search for vulcanoids, small rocky objects that scientists believe exist in orbits between Mercury and the Sun.

Quantum teleportation achieved over ten miles of free space

Quantum teleportation has achieved a new milestone or, should we say, a new ten-milestone: scientists have recently had success teleporting information between photons over a free space distance of nearly ten miles, an unprecedented length. The researchers who have accomplished this feat note that this brings us closer to communicating information without needing a traditional signal, and that the ten miles they have reached could span the distance between the surface of the earth and space.

'Zombie' satellite runs amok in Earth's orbit

An attempt to shut down the electronics payload of the out-of-control communications satellite Galaxy 15 has failed, leaving the satellite - which ceased responding to ground commands last month - still in its uncontrolled "zombiesat" drift toward orbits occupied by other spacecraft, the satellite's fleet operator Intelsat said Tuesday.

UC San Diego Physicists Locate Long Lost Soviet Reflector on Moon

04-26roverparkingspot
A team of physicists led by a professor at UC San Diego has pinpointed the location of a long lost light reflector left on the lunar surface by the Soviet Union nearly 40 years ago that many scientists had unsuccessfully searched for and never expected would be found.

Einstein's general relativity confirmed... again

Hubble-deep-space
Two new studies have independently tested Albert Einstein's General Theory of Relativity, further confirming its validity. Einstein's 1915 publication of this theory was - and still remains - one of the most impressive accomplishments of humanity for explaining the true nature of the universe.

Four Women in Space at the Same Time

Four-women-in-space-at-the-same-time-m
This doesn’t happen every day. Well, OK, it’s never happened before. As Mission STS-131 blasts off with three women on board they will soon rendezvous with a fourth who arrived at the International Space Station yesterday. Four women will be in space at the same time – a record so far. Here are short pithy profiles of each of these remarkable women.

Rotating Space Elevator Propels its Own Load

As the scientists explain, RSE motion is nearly a geometrical superposition of two components: its geosynchronous rotation around Earth (which has a one-day period), and the internal rotation of the string system that goes on around the axis perpendicular to the Earth (about a 10-minute period). This internal rotation of the string is especially important, as it provides a mechanism for objects to freely slide along the string, and also provides the dynamical stability to maintain the elevator shape.

Human Space Flight Needn't Rely on NASA

A bigger danger is that NASA could become the only customer for the fledgling spaceflight companies, making them de facto arms of the government, with all the attendant problems, and keeping them at the mercy of changing political winds. That's one reason Robert Bigelow, CEO of Bigelow Aerospace, which is developing commercial space stations, shuns government financing. "We don't have NASA currently on our radar screen as a client," he said during today's telecon.

The NASA Puffin: a one man electric helicopter/plane

Nasa-one-man-stealth-plane_2
A super-quiet, hover-capable aircraft design, NASA's experimental one-man Puffin could show just how much electric propulsion can transform our ideas of flight. It looks like nothing less than a flying suit or a jet pack with a cockpit.

Spacewalking Astronauts Seen With a Backyard Telescope

179vzn1
In reviewing the photos he shot, he saw a few bright pixels appear precisely where the work was going on at exactly the moment it was being conducted. In other words, he was looking at an astronaut!

Plan for Human Mission to Asteroid Gains Momentum

1259084306377
Not only would the deep space sojourn shake out hardware, it would also build confidence in long-duration stints at the moon and Mars. At the same time, the trek would sharpen skills to deal with a future space rock found on a collision course with Earth.

Space Elevator contestant's entry climbs a tether nearly a km

The contest requires their machines to climb 2,953 feet (nearly 1 kilometer) up a cable slung beneath a helicopter hovering nearly a mile high. LaserMotive's vehicle zipped up to the top in just over four minutes and immediately repeated the feat, qualifying for at least a $900,000 second-place prize. The device, a square of photo voltaic panels about 2 feet by 2 feet and topped by a motor structure and thin triangle frame, had failed to respond to the laser three times before it was lowered, inspected and then hoisted back up by the helicopter for the successful tries.
