Togetherville: A Social Network for Children… and their Grownups

Togetherville
Parents are encouraged to sign up for the social network as well, and “friend” their children. They can monitor who is friends with their children, and create a virtual neighborhood that consists of the children and adults that their child knows in the real world. Also important is the fact that parents must approve all friend requests sent to their child, and they have access to all of their child’s information at all times. Togetherville aims to involve parents in the online world of their children in a positive way, rather than keeping them at a distance.

ToonsTunes - virtual world for tweens to make their own music

As social networks target younger and younger audiences, ToonsTunes is taking a musical approach. Announced today at TechCrunch50, its virtual world for tweens takes place in a space station where their avatars live in personal pods and can record songs in a virtual studio called the Mix-O-Matic. In the Mix-O-Matic they create tracks by selecting from thousands of different instrumental loops—hip hop drums, pop guitar, funk keyboards, and, yes, even cowbell—recorded by professional rock musicians. Then they can lay down their own vocals. The site mixes it all together to make it sound decent.

Babble Raises $1 Million For Hipster Parenting Site

Babble, a magazine and parenting community site aimed at urban hipsters, has secured $1 million in Series A funding from Greycroft Partners. This round adds to the $2 million Babble raised earlier from Village Ventures in December of 2008. (This is an extension of that round at the same valuation) Spun off from sex and dating community Nerve Media, Babble takes a more modern view on parenting, aimed at a younger generation of parents who live in cities, equally share parenting duties (or at least make an effort) and use the internet to access information. It is the same demographic that the magazine Cookie is going after, except it tries to appeal to the Dads as well. Urbanbaby.com is also a site that appeals to urban dwellers and parents.

Social networking sites are all about narcissism

I am a member of the Facebook generation and I hate it, along with MySpace, LinkedIn and every other social networking site. I understand why people use them. They're convenient. In a world where it's hard to make and stay in touch with friends, these sites help people express themselves and connect to others. They prevent friends from falling into amiable oblivion. But using Web pages for the mass creation and consumption of relationships feels like the exact opposite of personal communication.
