She let her 9 year old son ride the subway alone, "he was ready"

That’s why letting Izzy find his way home alone seemed like a fine idea. Not dangerous. Not crazy. Not even very hard. My husband and I talked about it and agreed that our boy was ready. So on that sunny Sunday when I took him to that big, bright store, I said those words we don’t say much anymore.

Vicks VapoRub can be unsafe if used in nostrils

A Several years ago, we started warning readers not to put Vicks VapoRub in their nostrils. A pulmonologist alerted us to the possibility that one of the ingredients in Vicks, petrolatum, could get into the lungs and cause chronic inflammation. We got quite a few indignant responses from people who said they had been doing this for years. Here is just one example: "I read your warning not to put Vicks VapoRub in your nose. That's stupid. I've been stuffing my nose with Vicks for years, and I have never once come down with pneumonia. You can tell that to your know-it-all doctor. You shouldn't buy into everything that doctors tell you."

Disputed chemical bisphenol-A found in paper receipts

The Environmental Working Group found BPA on 40 percent of the receipts it collected from supermarkets, automated teller machines, gas stations and chain stores. In some cases, the total amount of BPA on the receipt was 1,000 times the amount found in the epoxy lining of a can of food, another controversial use of the chemical.

The Truth About Cold Water

3956249209_d29a814dbd
I’m going to come right out and tell you something that almost no one in the maritime industry understands. That includes mariners, executives, managers, insurers, dock workers, for certain – fisherman, and even many (most) rescue professionals: It is impossible to die from hypothermia in cold water unless you are wearing flotation, because without flotation – you won’t live long enough to become hypothermic.

Aspartame- America's Deadliest Sweetener

It's hard to believe such a chemical would be allowed into the food supply, but it was, and it has been wreaking silent havoc with people's health for the past 30 years. The truth is, it should never have been released onto the market, and allowing it to remain in the food chain is seriously hurting people -- no matter how many times you rebrand it under fancy new names.

Composite material used in Boeing 787 raises safety questions

54723958
The new material is tough. But hit hard enough, it breaks rather than bends. And in a fire, the epoxy resin burns. One early Boeing computer simulation was disturbing. In 2005, as design of the Dreamliner advanced, a Boeing analysis showed a crash that is survivable in a largely metal 777 would be deadly in a 787: The impact would shatter the bottom of the 787 fuselage and deliver a jolt severe enough to kill all the passengers.
