BP Magazine paints rosy side of huge oil disaster

“Much of the region’s [nonfishing boat] businesses — particularly the hotels — have been prospering because so many people have come here from BP and other oil emergency response teams,” another report says. Indeed, one tourist official in a local town makes it clear that “BP has always been a very great partner of ours here…We have always valued the business that BP sent us.”

Professor wants BP to try his giant cotton filter to scoop oil

The technique, which involves capturing the oil in a cotton filter treated with a chemical polymer, worked. The water, now clean, passed through the filter that he had fashioned out of a big T-shirt, while the oil was repelled by the polymer and preserved. He has suggested that the companies and government agencies trying to contain the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico caused by the April 20 explosion of BP's Deepwater Horizon drilling platform give his filter a try.

Is Now the Time to Buy BP Stock?

Apparently we should all be buying BP stock right now. At least that's the recommendation of the people paid to know these things: financial analysts who follow the company. Of the 17 surveyed by Bloomberg this week, 12 recommended it as a "buy." Five said hold. None said sell. Of course, analysts rarely label a stock as a sell, and a hold is often construed as nearly the same. Still, seriously? Two days after the stock tanked 15 percent, erasing $30 billion of BP's market capitalization, and not one analyst thinks you should sell it?

Asphalt-oil-army
In order to protect the coastline at Dauphin Island -- a site where tar balls have made landfall and hundreds of fish are washing up dead on the beach -- the US Army has launched a highly experimental plan to prevent any oil from reaching its shores. It plans on trapping the oil in Hesco baskets and then applying a chemical called CI Agent, turning the oil into a gelatinous solid. That solid, comprised from oil from the gulf spill, will then be collected and turned into asphalt. Watch how the agent works:

Florida governor wants to ban offshore drilling- will he succeed?

The session, in the wake of the BP oil spill that could threaten Florida's coast, would include the permanent ban on drilling in state waters – which run 3 to 10 miles from shore – and potentially legislation to promote renewable energy sources such as wind and solar. "I'd like to do it sooner rather than later," Crist told reporters at the Governor's Mansion. "People are concerned about it. I sense it."

Would you take a really cheap vacation to the Gulf coast now?

With forecasters calling for just a few clouds, a high near 80 degrees, and a monster oil slick still far from the state's beaches, Florida tourism officials sought Thursday to avert a different kind of coastal disaster, this one marked by vacant hotels, idle charter-fishing boats and empty restaurants.

The BP oil spill: America's Chernobyl?

Gulfmap
Meanwhile, an estimated tens of thousands of gallons of crude oil are spilling out into the ocean every day, millions of gallons total so far. The impact on wildlife and the entire Gulf ecosystem is devastating: not only is oil itself dangerous, but upon being exposed to sunlight at the water's surface, the oil is converted into various toxins, poisonous chemicals, and cancer-causing carcinogens.
