Arizona's police-state, anti-immigrant law terrorizes locals

Police-state
On Monday, the Arizona legislature passed a new immigration law that not only allows racial profiling, it legally requires it. The police in Arizona may now stop anyone for any reason - or for no reason at all - and demand the person produce documentation that he or she is a U.S. citizen. This measure will harass U.S. citizens who happen to be Hispanic, and it will terrorize and intimidate the undocumented workers who reside in the state.

British court denies right to jury: first time in 400 years

Jury_box1
Earlier this month, a British judge sentenced defendants in a criminal case without any sitting jury, for the first time in 400 years. The whole point of a jury is to serve as a bulwark against arbitrary state punishment or an overzealous prosecutor. Abolishing the right to a jury offends basic notions of civil liberties and democratic rights.

Stevens
Stevens described himself as "pretty darn conservative" in a 2007 interview for the New York Times magazine, and yet everyone else on the court is to his political right. Stevens' retirement spells doom for liberal reform, let alone radical change, coming from the Supreme Court in the future.

D.C. bill: teachers to be fired for sex with students

Emergency legislation sponsored by D.C. Council member Kwame Brown (D-At Large) would go part of the way toward addressing that issue, by requiring the school system to fire any teacher who is found to have engaged in a sex act with a student, regardless of the student's age.

Should Retroactive Registration Laws Apply to Sex Offenders?

Read this one slowly, it's a good one. If a law requires you to register as a sex offender is passed after you commit the offense, is it fair to charge you with breaking that law? "Carr was clearly in violation of Indiana law, but claims he shouldn't be subject to punishment under SORNA, a law that went into effect more than a year after he moved to Indiana and three years after committing the sex offense."

Microsoft Word Gets Facelift -- InformationWeek

It looks like the courts still have power over monopoly; that patents from the less huge can still be upheld against the huge usurper. Maybe we should sue our representatives who follow the money too, instead of the peoples' patent.
