"Eating healthy has been one of the big casualties of this economic downturn," said Harry Balzer, chief industry analyst at the NPD Group and author of the research company's annual Eating Patterns in America report. "Last year, consumers cut back on eating better-for-you and organic foods." The culprit is cost. About 70 percent of respondents to a recent Technomic Inc. survey said healthier foods are increasingly difficult to afford.

Utah Teens Ticketed for McDonald's Drive-Through Rap

The teens said they were imitating a popular video on YouTube. They rapped their order, which begins with, "I need a double cheeseburger and hold the lettuce ..." once quickly before repeating it more slowly. Spenser Dauwalder said employees at the restaurant told him and his friends they were holding up the line and needed to order or leave. The 18-year-old said nobody was in line. He and his three 17-year-old friends left without buying anything.

How far can you roam in the continental US away from a McD's?

So, I set out to determine the farthest point from a Micky Dee’s – in the lower 48 states, at least. This endeavor required information, and the nice folks at AggData were kind enough to provide it to me: a complete list of all 13,000-or-so U.S. restaurants, in CSV format, geolocated for maximum convenience. From there, a bit of software engineering gymnastics, and… Behold, a visualization of the contiguous United States, colored by distance to the nearest domestic McDonald’s!

Have you ever seen a McDonald’s or Wendy’s advertisement and really appreciated how delicious a sandwich or burger looked. You were so impressed that you went to said fast food restaurant and ordered yourself one. California signs law requiring chains to post calories to menus

The new law, signed Tuesday, requires any restaurant with 20 or more locations to post calorie information next to the menu item (on the lit menu boards). "The law requires chains with 20 or more locations -- more than 17,000 restaurants statewide -- to post the information by 2011. Starting in July, restaurants and drive-throughs will have to offer menus that provide information on the calories, saturated fat, carbohydrates and sodium in each item... Schwarzenegger said the legislation was part of the state's push to set a national model for nutrition policy and to fight obesity, which costs the state $28.6 billion in health-care costs, lost productivity and workers' compensation. "
