Peak Phosphorus, and Why It Matters

Our dwindling supply of phosphorus, a primary component underlying the growth of global agricultural production, threatens to disrupt food security across the planet during the coming century. This is the gravest natural resource shortage you've never heard of. The root of this problem has previously been the subject of presidential concern. In a message to Congress in 1938, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt warned that the phosphorus content of American agricultural land "has greatly diminished."

STOP THE CHAOS--FIND SUCCESS AND BALANCE!

Do you live from crisis to crisis? Do you find a strange sort of comfort living a life of disarray, discord, even lawlessness? Would you descibe your lifestyle as a state of disorder or confusion? If this is your life, you may suffer from Chaos Addiction. Chaos Addiction is the only non-tangible addiction in society today. I believe that the other addictions (alcohol, drugs, sex, gambling, etc.) are only symptoms of the underlying addiction to chaos. When somebody gets treated for their addictions, unless you uncover what is driving that addiction, relapse can occur. If you truely want to lead a more balance life, then focus on the things you have control over and learn to let go of things you can't. You must train yourself to become less reactionary and more decisioned based in your life.

There's no way that balloon could've lifted a 50 lb boy

(Do you believe his logic and math?) Ok, here's my math: The volume of an oblate spheroid that's approx 20'x3' = 17.79 cubic meters ( http://bit.ly/2cv4Ac ). According to How Stuff Works, one liter of helium can lift one gram. Which converts to 22,650 liters of helium to lift a 50 lb boy. Wolfram alpha says that 22,650 liters = 22.65 m^3 (cubic meters), meaning that the balloon could've only lifted about 39.27 lbs *IF* it was: Fully inflated (which it didn't seem to be), at sea-level (which it wasn't) and we disregard everything about air density and the temperature of the air (which was warm yesterday in Ft. Collins around the time of launch).

Are We Ready for a Solar Katrina?

In 1859, a solar storm, also known as the Carrington event (after the astronomer Richard Carrington, who first recognized the cause) fried the telegraph system. Another powerful space weather event in 1989 caused a blackout in Quebec, Canada. Other storms have led to diverted airplanes and impaired telecommunications satellites. Earlier this year, a group of experts from around the country, including Balstad, issued a report to the National Academies of Sciences on the economic and social impacts of solar storms.

Wachovia in talks to be sold, should we put off the bailout?

and see if this thing just sort of works itself out? Or, is it working itself out because of the imminent bailout? This is the 3rd or 4th major bank since the bailout announcement that has moved on its own. "Wachovia, saddled by mortgage losses, is in talks about a possible sale to a healthier bank such as Citigroup and Wells Fargo, according to sources familiar with the discussions...Senior executives of the three companies held extensive discussions over the weekend in a process closely watched and encouraged by federal regulators. The Treasury Department, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. and several branches of the Federal Reserve were involved in the conversations. "

Bailout is as big as the Pentagon budget

The bailout is $500B, the pentagon budget is $600B. The CBO projects a $10 trillion deficit early next year. "The $500 billion that the U.S. government estimates that it will cost to buy the risky investments of financial institutions in coming months approaches what it costs to run the Pentagon for a year...The cost of buying the bad loans at the core of the financial crisis is likely to push the national debt past $10 trillion for the first time early next year, according to the White House Budget Office...What effect that spending will have on the U.S. economy is unclear, although it will almost surely complicate any policy plans the next administration will have, fiscal observers said.
