Ford might shut down Mercury after 71 years

If Mercury is indeed dropped, it will join Pontiac, Hummer and Saturn as major U.S. automobile names abandoned during the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. But the brand's potential demise comes amid a general culling of U.S. auto lines, the cause of which is broader than the downturn. Industry analysts say there were too many repetitive models, with automakers selling essentially the same vehicle under different names. The last Plymouth rolled off the line in 2001, the last Oldsmobile in 2004.

Volvo automatic collision detection system don't work so good

Volvosmash
At a demonstration of Volvo's new collision warning system in Sweden this week, Wired got first-hand experience of what happens when it goes badly wrong -- and we've got the video below to prove it.The new Volvo S60, due for release later this year, was fired out of Volvo's testing tunnel at around 30MPH, and the collision detection system should have kicked in, bringing the car automatically to a halt before hitting the truck in its path.
