RescueTime: Time monitoring for web activity, efficiency

RescueTime has raised about $1M, they give you data about your usage so you can be more efficient. They have about 100,000 users. "Y Combinator startup RescueTime lets users monitor which applications and websites they use/visit the most, and then lets them use that information to try to cut down on inefficient uses of time. It’s useful on an individual basis, and it helps businesses (who pay $4-$8/user/month) monitor what applications are being used, and where time is being wasted."

It's been 40 days since McCain or Palin news conference

Forget about your political persuasion. Is this smart? "As of this writing, it has been 39 days and 22 hours since Sen. John McCain last held a news conference (despite having promised to hold weekly Q&A sessions with the press if he's elected). According to the Democrats, it's been 24 days and 11 hours since his running mate, Sarah Palin, held one...Not the most important issue of the day, perhaps. But maybe the most ironic, given where McCain and Palin were Monday: In Media, Pa. Where they didn't take questions."

$13B in Iraq aid wasted or stolen, according to ex-Iraqi watchdog

Our watchdog and their watchdog now agree, someone stole a lot of money. 'Salam Adhoob, a former chief investigator for Iraq's Commission on Public Integrity, told the Senate Democratic Policy Committee, an arm of the Democratic caucus, that an Iraqi auditing bureau "could not properly account for' the money...While many of the projects audited "were not needed -- and many were never built," he said, "this very real fact remains: Billions of American dollars that paid for these projects are now gone.' Woman whose dogs mauled neighbor in apartment gets 15 years

Remember that case where the couple had 2 dogs that killed that poor woman who lived across the hall? "The case is the California's first murder conviction connected to a dog mauling, prosecutors say. The case turned into a tabloid sensation because of the viciousness of the attack — the dogs tore all of Whipple's clothing from her body and left her with more than 70 bites — and the seemingly cavalier attitudes of Knoller and her law partner and husband, Robert Noel, who blamed Whipple for the attack..."

BoxCycle- Matches up buyers and sellers of used cardboard boxes

Boxcycle attempts to solve 2 problems- buying boxes is expensive, and businesses have tons of old boxes that they have to pay to recycle. It's an online matchup service that lets businesses sell their old boxes to those who need them. "BoxCycle, a San Francisco-based startup launching this week, is looking to help connect the two parties by giving businesses a simple way to sell their boxes to anyone who will take them. To begin selling, businesses first establish their hours of availability, and then input how many boxes of each size they have from a list of predetermined choices (all prices are fixed and depend on box size)...(there’s a $5 penalty if you miss your appointment)."

A mathematical derivation of impossibility of a scene in Superman

Some guy did the math. "Early in the film, Lois and Clark are on assignment at Niagara Falls. A little kid is playing on an observation platform, and his grip suddenly slips. He falls off the Falls… and falls… and falls…So here’s my question: how far would a child really fall in 28.4 seconds?"
