WASHINGTON — Sen. Ted Stevens, the longest-serving Republican senator and a figure in Alaska politics since before statehood, has been indicted on seven federal counts of filing false financial disclosure reports with the Senate.
The indictment accuses Stevens, 84, of failing to disclose gifts worth more than $250,000 from an oilfield services company and its former chairman, who pleaded guilty to corruption charges last year. Stevens is the first sitting senator to be indicted in 15 years.
