Crime-ridden Arkansas town expands 24-hour curfew

Officers armed with military rifles have been stopping and questioning passers-by in a neighborhood plagued by violence that's been under a 24-hour curfew for a week. On Tuesday, the Helena-West Helena City Council voted 9-0 to allow police to expand that program into any area of the city, despite a warning from a lawyer with the American Civil Liberties Union of Arkansas that the police stops were unconstitutional. Police Chief Fred Fielder said the patrols have netted 32 arrests since they began last week in a 10-block neighborhood in this small town on the banks of the Mississippi River long troubled by poverty. The council said those living in the city want the random shootings and drug-fueled violence to stop, no matter what the cost.

Sigh. Oh Microsoft. Windows dies with blue screen at Olympics

2008-08-12-nest1
(click [more] to see these incredible pictures). A lot of the special video effects were apparently being run by Windows. Amazingly, Windows sucks for the Chinese too. From the article: "It appears one of the many Microsoft computers projecting images of 5000 years of Chinese history onto the facade of the Bird's Nest during the opening ceremony crashed. And crashed hard. Gizmodo reported Monday on the appearance of the 'Blue Screen of Death,'"

Study says most corporations pay zero US income taxes

From the Government Accountability Office (GAO): Fully 2/3 of all U.S. corporations paid zero income taxes between 1998 and 2005. From the article: "The study by the Government Accountability Office, expected to be released Tuesday, said about 68 percent of foreign companies doing business in the U.S. avoided corporate taxes over the same period. Collectively, the companies reported trillions of dollars in sales, according to GAO's estimate. 'It's shameful that so many corporations make big profits and pay nothing to support our country," said Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., who asked for the GAO study with Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich.'"
