Rodriguez excecution Thursday - was present at police killing

Michael Rodriguez will be put to death in Texas on Thursday. He was originally sentenced to life for arranging to have his wife killed. Then he, along with a gang of others broke out of prison in 2000. They went to work robbing a store and killed a police officer in the process. Rodriguez was sentenced to death in 2002. He hid under a blanket while a fellow gang member pulled the trigger. He is at peace with the sentence. From the article: "Michael Rodriguez, one of the "Texas 7" inmates who escaped from prison in 2000, has volunteered to accept the death penalty. Rodriguez was initially serving a life sentence for arranging the murder of his wife. He was sentenced to death in 2002 for the murder of a police officer while he was on the run. His execution is scheduled for Thursday."

From the article: "The exact time of maximum should be about 7:00 a.m. EDT (1100 GMT) Aug. 12, according to Margaret Campbell-Brown and Peter Brown in the 2008 Observer's Handbook of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada. If so, the timing is very good for meteor watchers observing before dawn in North America, especially in the western states. And that morning, the waxing gibbous moon sets around 1:30 a.m. local daylight saving time, leaving a dark sky for the next 3 hours."

60 million iPhone app downloads in last 30 days

Even though many of them are free, that's an impressive number. Steve Jobs announced that the company has made $30M in revenue from the paid ones. From the article: "At the current rate, the App Store is on track to bring in annual sales of $360 million. Apple keeps about 30 percent to cover its costs (as it does with iTunes song sales), and the rest go to the developers who create the apps."

Police attempt to arrest youth, get surrounded, shoot, 3 dead

This has caused rioting in Montreal. From the article: "Montreal police said the officers were trying to arrest an individual in Henri Bourassa Park when they were surrounded by a group of about 20 youths. A few individuals allegedly broke away from the group and rushed the officers. According to police, one of the officers then opened fire. The officers were not wounded."
